Todd Terry
In the late 1980s, Todd Terry was New York house music. The Brooklyn DJ started out spinning hip-hop as a teenager before helping shape the sound of house, and his 1995 remix of Everything but the Girl’s “Missing” sold millions and relaunched the duo’s career. Through InHouse Records, founded in 1999, “Todd the God” still releases straight to the dancefloor.
Records such as Royal House’s “Can You Party” and the Todd Terry Project’s “Weekend”, both from 1988, brought hip-hop’s sampling attitude to house and defined the raw New York sound that followed. His production on the Jungle Brothers’ “I’ll House You” fused the two worlds in a single record.
In the mid-1990s he took that sound into the charts with Martha Wash and Jocelyn Brown on “Keep On Jumpin’” and “Something Goin’ On”. Decades later he is still behind the decks, still digging for samples, and he played Social in 2023 and again in 2024.
